I've made it through the first 2 weeks of school. I started out taking forest management, Geography/geo-technology, Humanities, and Statistics. I dropped humanities. I'm down to 12 credits. I simply didn't want to work that hard at school this term. I'm in love with statistics, FM is interesting, and Geo is left to be seen. Geo is a lot of map (you know geography) we are going to use GPS units yay. I will take a moment and let you all know that I am completely and totally directionally challanged. If you give me a compass and a map I will wander in circles and not understand why the compass doesn't work. I once got lost in a casino for 45 minutes. I have a GPS unit in my car, I put in directions. I still get lost. How does one get lost while using a gps unit you ask? I don't know.
Yesterday was our very first appt post diagnosis. A1c was 8.1, which is fine. I don't know what she is "supposed" to be, but the endo said that 8.1 is good. Her A1c at diagnosis was 11.5. We are doing fine, Vivian is doing fine. The goal right now is to get her BGL between 100-200 and stay there. That is harder than it sounds. Her body is still doing what it's supposed to do, just not well. She gets a little low and her liver shoots out some glucose. She gets a little high her pancreas shoots out a little insulin. This is called the honeymoon phase it can end at any time and it can continue indefinitely.
Life is. I don't know what yet, but it is.
Need to know what an A1c is? It's the average of her blood glucose level over a period of 3 months. Hemoglobin A1c.
Did I mention she has Celiac disease? She does. This was diagnosed about a week after the diabetes. It was the celiac that had us at the ER the day she was diagnosed with Diabetes. Celiac is a gluten intolerance. Gluten is in everything. It is everywhere. Barley malt, oat flour, oatmeal, rye, wheat, it's in soy sauce, and cereals. I don't want you to think I'm a celiacist, some of my best friends are glutens-pasta, bread, you know all the best things in life. Diabetes I can handle, but I'm not rich enough to eat gluten free.

Life gets different
On Dec 5th my daughter Vivian turned 6.
On Dec. 8 2008 she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I had no clue she had it. Of course in hind sight I can absolutely see it, but at the time I had no clue what I was looking at.
Here is what was going on at the time:
She drank a lot
She peed the bed 3-4 times a night
She peed her pants a few times
she complained of being tired and slept for long periods of time
On Dec. 19th she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
Here are the celiac symptoms:
Her stomach hurt all the time
she had diarhea almost daily from a very young age
she would wake up and throw up at night
she had dark allergy shiners
At 6 years old she weighed less than 4 lbs.
What happened on Dec 8th you wonder? Or maybe not. I'll tell you anyway. Vivian was at school and complained about not feeling well. The school called my husband at home and he suggested they let her lay down, but that she would be fine. The stomach ache was a constant complaint, she had been diagnosed with a dairy intolerance earlier in the year, and prior to that it was reflux. Nothing seemed to make it go away.
That night she wouldn't eat dinner. She complained about her stomach hurting and laid down on the couch. I put her in the hot tub to see if that would make it better. It didn't. I'm a paranoid mom, as we all are, I decided she had either appendicitis, a urinary tract infection, or strep throat. I took her to the ER at 8pm. Initially I drove off and didn't go in. I felt stupid for going to the ER for a stomach ache. We did go in though, something told me to go in.
The first thing they did was a clean catch UA. After that it's a huge blur. They did the UA and we waited. The Dr. came in and said that she had diabetes. He told me a bunch of numbers that meant exactly nothing to me. He said we were going to be admitted to the hospital in Reno and that I could drive her or they would transport her.
I called my husband in Reno at work. I called my SIL and asked her to come get my son.
After a bag of saline Vivian, Hazel, and I headed off to Reno.
